Camilo Villegas has finally ended his US PGA Tour title drought, securing a victory at the Bermuda Championship. He carded six birdies in a six-under par 65, outperforming Alex Noren by two strokes.
The 41-year-old Colombian last won a tour title at the 2014 Wyndham Championship, and his emotional fifth tour title came at Port Royal in Southampton. Villegas secured a two-shot lead over third-round leader Noren, confirming his win with a two-putt par at 18.
Villegas expressed, “Wow, what a ride, man. I love this game. This game has given me so many great things. But in the process, it kicks your butt.” He missed seven cuts in 11 starts on the tour this season before earning a tie for second in Mexico a week earlier.
The victory grants Villegas exempt status on the US tour until 2025 and a spot in next year’s Masters, PGA Championship, and Players Championship. He dedicated the win to his late daughter, Mia, who passed away from brain cancer in 2020 at 22 months old.
Starting the day one stroke behind Noren, Villegas maintained the pressure with steady birdies, ultimately emerging victorious against his fellow competitor.
Villegas acknowledged the support from fans and friends worldwide, stating, “I’ve got my little one up there watching it, smiling. She’s where she needs to be after a long fight. It’s been a fun week.”
The contest was intense, with Noren vying for his first US PGA Tour title, ending the day with mixed emotions. Germany’s Matti Schmid and China’s Carl Yuan also showcased impressive performances at the event.
Overall, the Bermuda Championship was an exciting and emotional event that solidified Villegas’ triumphant return.
