Utah football’s receivers see plenty of additions each season in the hopes of improving the passing game. Initially, true freshman Mikey Matthews, and transfers Mycah Pittman, Emery Simmons, and Money Parks were emerging players at the forefront. However, in their tenth game of the regular season, senior Devaughn Vele once again champions as the team’s best option despite a quarterback dilemma that has limited the team to just one 200-yard passing game. Vele’s performance propelled head coach Kyle Whittingham to admit that the team needs to use Vele more.
Not only does the team have Vele, but also others including Money Parks, the impressive Mikey Matthews, and former tight end Munir McClain who has shown potential. Furthermore, Vele’s recent performances have displayed the outstanding player and teammate he is after overcoming a slow start to the season. It’s no surprise that Vele is seen as one of the best in the Pac-12 despite his humble and quiet demeanor.
Vele’s selflessness, leadership, contribution to the team, and experience from his time at Utah reflect his development as a player and person. His physical abilities have impressed others such as teammates and even players from other teams. The wide receiver’s teammates and coaches applaud his latest accomplishments, conveying pride in the fact that these events will, hopefully, open doors for his future in the NFL.
While the focus for now remains on upcoming games, the rest of the season, and potentially the Pac-12 Championship, the Utes anticipate Vele’s momentum to continue while keeping the quarterback comfortable and securing more standout performances.
