Every week, sports experts and writers make projections of where every possible bowl-eligible team will end up playing to cap off the 2023 season.
College sports editor Erick Smith from USA TODAY Sports submitted his entries this week and noted that his projections were relatively consistent after a straightforward week of college football.
The Florida Gators surprised everyone with a last-minute upset over the South Carolina Gamecocks last Saturday afternoon. Taking into account the Gators’ recent performances, Smith predicts that the team will receive an invitation to play in the Birmingham Bowl in Alabama.
The projected opponent for the Florida Gators would be the SMU Mustangs from the American Conference. The Mustangs currently hold a 4-2 record and are on a two-game winning streak, having defeated East Carolina 31-10 on the road last Thursday.
However, experts at ESPN and CBS Sports have different opinions from Smith’s projection, foreseeing the Gators playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl instead.
The Birmingham Bowl is scheduled to take place on December 23.
The Florida Gators are currently on a bye week, resting before their highly-anticipated rivalry match in Jacksonville against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.
