NEW YORK – Benoit Saint-Denis feels grateful for the upcoming fight this weekend.
Earning a match with a high-ranking opponent in the UFC is no small feat, and Saint-Denis will finally meet someone on the UFC official lightweight rankings as he goes up against Matt Frevola this Saturday on the pay-per-view main card of UFC 295.
Saint-Denis (12-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) shows respect for Frevola (11-3-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) for accepting the fight despite being unranked.
“I like the guy because he immediately accepted the challenge,” Saint-Denis expressed during UFC 295 media day. “He’s taking a risk because he’s ranked and I’m not. I believe he likes challenges, and he’s not afraid to brawl with me, so it will be a great fight.
“I’m expecting a tough guy. He’s well-rounded, has good cardio, and has confidence in himself, just like I do. It’s a battle between two resilient competitors.”
Saint-Denis, hailing from France, will fight in enemy territory as Frevola is from New York. The Frenchman has no issue with fighting Frevola on his home soil due to past experiences in his career.
“In France, it was legalized very late, so I only fought twice in France for the UFC,” Saint-Denis explained. “Before that, I was traveling all around the world for fights because I couldn’t do so in France, so I’ve always been booed, and I’ve only been cheered in Paris. It’s not a problem for me. I like that.”
