Tom Aspinall has sparked quite a reaction on social media following his call for Jon Jones to be stripped of his UFC heavyweight title.
The interim titleholder didn’t mince words as he mentioned that Jones should be stripped of the title while recovering from a torn pectoral muscle. Aspinall also stated that he should be the undisputed champion and proposed defending against Stipe Miocic in the meantime.
While some supported Aspinall’s remarks, others didn’t hold back in expressing their disagreement.
When interviewed by Michael Bisping, Aspinall shared his perspective, saying, “I’m just trying to get my dream fight. I’m trying to fight one of the legends…I would love to get a crack at these two guys before they retire just to get it on my resume.”
Aspinall claimed the interim belt after knocking out Sergei Pavlovich on short notice in response to Jones’ training injury. However, Aspinall has yet to receive clarity from the UFC regarding the next steps in his career.
Despite facing backlash from some fans, Aspinall remains hopeful about getting a chance to fight Jones or Miocic before their potential retirements. “I’m trying to challenge myself and live my dream while I have the chance,” he explained.
