Minnesota Duluth volleyball team secures NCAA tournament bid after unlikely victory in NSIC
Duluth’s local volleyball stars have earned an unexpected NCAA tournament bid after securing a dramatic victory over seventh-ranked Southwest Minnesota State in the NSIC tournament quarterfinals. Despite the team’s doubts and concerns about their strength as competitors, their fate was revealed during a tense selection show on Monday.
The Bulldog’s head coach, Jim Boos, described the team’s reaction as a blend of anxiety and jubilation, as they were elated to earn the final at-large bid in the region, securing their 18th tournament bid in 20 attempts. With the playoff spot secured, the team is now preparing to face No. 3 Wayne State in the regional quarterfinals.
“I just sort of sat there with my mouth open just staring at the screen,” UMD fifth-year middle blocker Hope Schjenken shared, “seeing our name pop up on the screen I just honestly couldn’t believe it, but I was also thrilled at the same time.”
With an underdog mentality, the Bulldogs are set to take on the Wildcats in their quest for victory. These local stars are armed with the expertise of their head coach and are driven by an unyielding determination to succeed. All eyes will be on this epic clash in the Gangelhoff Center on Thursday, Nov. 30, as the Bulldogs take on Wayne State in a thrilling showdown.
