UFC fighter Derrick Lewis faces legal trouble as he was recently arrested in Houston for reckless driving, according to records from the Harris County court. The arrest was made public just four days before Lewis is set to headline a UFC Fight Night event in São Paulo, Brazil. Fox 26 Houston reported that Lewis was allegedly caught driving a red Lamborghini at 136 mph in a 50 mph zone. The authorities claim he made unsafe lane changes and swerved in and out of lanes, with school buses said to be on the road at the same time.
At 38 years old, Lewis has been charged with a misdemeanor and might face up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $200 if found guilty. He was released on a $100 recognizance bond.
It is uncertain whether this arrest will impact Lewis’ participation in the upcoming UFC card, where he was already a substitute fighter. Originally, Curtis Blaydes was scheduled to face Jailton Almeida, a rising star. However, Blaydes withdrew for unknown reasons earlier this month, leading to Lewis taking his place.
Recently, Lewis inked a new eight-fight contract with the UFC, after experiencing one of the most successful nights of his career. He rebounded from a three-fight losing streak with a TKO victory over Marcos Rogério de Lima, courtesy of a flying knee, and delivered a highly entertaining post-fight interview.
Although Lewis has consistently been among the top contenders in the heavyweight division, the Almeida bout presents a formidable challenge for him. Almeida, a Brazilian, holds an undefeated record of five wins in the UFC, with four first-round finishes. His most recent triumph was a rear-naked choke submission victory over Jairzinho Rozenstruik in May.
