The UConn men’s basketball team, reigning national champions, achieved a third-place ranking in the Big East preseason coaches’ poll, released on Tuesday. Stephon Castle, the team’s point guard, was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year, while Donovan Clingan, the sophomore center, secured a spot on the All-Big East Second Team. Alex Karaban also received an honorable mention.
In the coaches’ poll, the Huskies amassed 79 points but did not receive any first-place votes. They trailed behind Marquette, the reigning dual conference champion, and Creighton. Villanova and St. John’s, led by Rick Pitino, rounded out the top five.
Last season, UConn finished fourth in the league with a 13-7 record in Big East play. Looking ahead, Castle, a McDonald’s All-American and highly ranked recruit, is expected to share the backcourt with returning point guard Tristen Newton.
Despite dealing with a foot strain, Clingan showcased his skills by averaging 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game last season in limited playing time. The 7-foot-2 center from Bristol is anticipated to be a leader for the defending national champions and has already received Preseason All-America accolades from various publications.
Karaban, a forward, had an impressive debut season, earning unanimous Big East All-Freshman recognition. He averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and shot 40.2% from beyond the arc. Karaban quickly transitioned into a starting role after the team’s season-opener and led the Huskies in minutes per game.
