UConn Women’s Basketball Star Breanna Stewart Breaks WNBA Single-Season Scoring Record
UConn women’s basketball legend Breanna Stewart has made history by breaking the WNBA’s single-season scoring record, surpassing the previous record held by another former UConn great, Diana Taurasi. Stewart, a four-time NCAA Champion, has achieved this incredible feat with a remarkable four 40-plus point games during the season, reaching a total of 885 points. She scored 25 more points than Taurasi’s mark set in 2006, accomplishing this in 38 games while Taurasi did it in 34.
The WNBA implemented a new 40-game regular-season slate in 2022, for which Stewart’s accomplishment is even more impressive. “It means a lot,” Stewart commented after the game. “Any time I’m in the same limelight as ‘D,’ it’s a huge honor. I have something I can hold over her head a little bit. Really appreciate everything that I’ve been able to do and wouldn’t be able to do it without my teammates.”
The two-time WNBA Champion achieved this record-breaking performance during the New York Liberty’s 94-93 victory over the Dallas Wings, marking the Liberty’s seventh straight triumph. Stewart closed the game with a double-double of 40 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 56% from the field and 42.9% from the perimeter.
