Tyler Mawhinney’s 64 leads all First Coast players in high school district tournaments

Tyler Mawhinney, who participated in the Junior Players Championship on Sept. 1, achieved the lowest district golf score among First Coast players. His impressive performance included shooting a 64 at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club. Mawhinney’s exceptional skills were evident as he outperformed his Fleming Island teammates Jaylen Abbas by five shots and Emmett Kuhlenkamp by six shots, leading the Golden Eagles to a resounding 33-shot victory over Nease in the District 3-3A tournament.

Mawhinney’s remarkable round consisted of a 5-under 31 on the front nine. Despite a double-bogey at No. 12, he bounced back and birdied his last four holes. His score of 64 was the second-lowest individual score in the state across all classifications, only surpassed by Lorenzo Rodriguez’s 63 at Grand Palms in Pembroke Pines in District 13-1A.

Notably, other teams also achieved substantial victories in their respective district tournaments. Ponte Vedra’s girls won the District 3-2A tournament with an impressive 70-shot margin. The Beachside girls secured a victory in District 4-2A with an 85-shot lead, while the Lake City Columbia girls dominated District 2-2A with a triple-digit lead over second-place Crawfordville Wakulla.

The regional tournaments are scheduled for Oct. 30-31, with 14 First Coast girls teams and 13 boys teams advancing. Additionally, 13 girls individual qualifiers and 13 boys individual qualifiers will compete, bringing the total number of players involved to 161. The top two teams and the top two individuals not on those teams from each region will advance to the state tournaments next month. Moreover, eight at-large teams and eight at-large individuals in each class will advance to the state tournament based on the FHSAA’s iWanamaker index.
