Trade Deadline Prospect: Who Will Make their MLB Debut First?

In this edition of the Mets Minor League Mailbag, SNY contributor Joe DeMayo answers fan questions.

First Prospect to Make it to Majors

From @BillMeyer_1: Who do you think is the first one to make it to the majors from the prospects they acquired at the trade deadline?

The first prospect to make it to the majors from the trade deadline acquisitions might come down to three options: right-hander Justin Jarvis (from the Mark Canha trade), infielder Luisangel Acuña (from the Max Scherzer trade), or outfielder Drew Gilbert (from the Justin Verlander trade). The Mets left Jarvis off their 40-man roster, making him eligible to be drafted in the Rule 5 Draft. If he remains with the Mets, he will likely start with Triple-A Syracuse and could be called up to the majors at some point. Acuña is already on the Mets’ 40-man roster, so a call-up for him is certainly an easier move. Gilbert, on the other hand, had a great performance with a .984 OPS for Double-A Binghamton and is likely to start in Triple-A.

MLB Draft Strategy

From @danieltfried: Are the Mets in a place where they need to think about drafting for pitching needs rather than best available talent?

The Mets’ amateur scouting department needs to stay on the path of getting the best available talent despite the need for pitching. It would be a mistake for the organization to pass on a superior player in the MLB Draft just because they could use more pitchers. Teams should stick to their draft boards, especially in the early rounds.

Organization Infield Depth Chart

From @Dave_Schoenfeld: The Mets seem to have an abundance of infield prospects with pitching being an obvious gap. Is there a real opportunity to move some combination of them for pitching?

The Mets likely have a good chance to utilize their infield depth to explore potential impact pitching trades in the market. Teams might consider looking at the infielders the Mets could potentially have available when considering potential impact pitching trades.
