PGA Tour players Jake Staiano and Vincie India have recently been suspended for violating the PGA Tour Integrity Program by placing bets on PGA Tour competitions. Staiano, who received a three-month suspension, recently appeared on the podcast ‘Any Given Monday’ to discuss the situation.
Staiano, a Colorado State alum, admitted to gambling on events but believes that his three-month ban is excessive compared to the relatively low wagers he made. In 2021, he placed a total of four bets amounting to $116.20, all of which were tied to Bryson DeChambeau. One of the bets was $25 on DeChambeau making a birdie on a specific hole during a Tour event, while the other three were on DeChambeau during ‘The Match’ against Brooks Koepka.
Interestingly, Staiano mentioned that the three bets on ‘The Match’ didn’t appear to be an issue since the event was not an official Tour event but just an exhibition. This means that his three-month suspension revolves around a single $25 wager.
While some may find it unnecessary to explain the situation due to the relatively small wager amount, Staiano sees this as an opportunity to caution other players. He wants to ensure that they understand what happened so that they don’t make the same mistake, as it could have a significant impact on their careers.
“I’ve accepted my punishment. It is what it is,” he explained. “Whether it’s fair or not, that can be debated. But one of my main concerns is making sure other guys fully grasp the situation, so they don’t find themselves in the same position. It could be career-altering.”
Staiano revealed that he was first contacted by an investigator in May 2023. All eight Korn Ferry Tour events he participated in during the ’23 season occurred after the initial contact regarding a potential violation. Staiano made the cut in three out of the eight events and earned just over $21,000 throughout the season.
