FEEL THE SWAGGER: Detroit Red Wings’ offensive firepower might have started a new home opener tradition

Red Wings right wing Alex DeBrincat skates against the Lightning during the first period on Saturday, Oct. 14 2023, at Little Caesars Arena.

Game notes: Toronto, Boston, and Florida are expected to secure their playoff berths from last season. Therefore, every other Atlantic Division game, including today’s match between the Red Wings and Senators in Ottawa, is like a playoff game. With both teams holding a 3-1-0 record and the trade that sent Alex DeBrincat from the Sens to Michigan, it’s safe to say that today’s usually sleepy 1 p.m. start has the potential to wake up a bit today.

The Red Wings struggled in Ottawa last season, losing both games in late February and ultimately ending their playoff hopes. They haven’t won in Ottawa since Feb. 2, 2019, when they had a 2-0 victory with goals from Danny DeKeyser and Darren Helm, and Jonathan Bernier stopping all 35 shots. The current Red Wings roster has no players from that game since general manager Steve Yzerman has made significant changes to the team.

The Wings are pleased with the DeBrincat trade as he leads the franchise with five goals and eight points in four games. On the other hand, Ottawa might be disappointed with Dominik Kubalik, who hasn’t picked up a point yet. The Senators are led by All-Star Brady Tkachuk, who has four goals this season, and 21-year-old Tim Stützle, who has two goals and four assists.

Following today’s game, the Red Wings will have a short rest and then face the Calgary Flames at Little Caesars Arena at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Senators, on the other hand, will host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
