Golf league launch in jeopardy after venue damage

The highly-anticipated launch of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s simulator golf league may be postponed as a result of an unexpected power outage that caused damage to the air-supported dome of the Florida-based venue, TGL revealed on Wednesday.
No individuals were harmed, and no technology was affected within the Palm Beach Gardens arena where 24 PGA Tour players are set to compete using a simulator screen and adjustable putting surface starting on Jan. 9 in primetime.
“While we evaluate the damage, it is currently too early to determine the impact on our schedules,” TGL stated in an email to Reuters.
This is the latest setback for TGL following Masters champion Jon Rahm’s withdrawal from the league due to scheduling conflicts.
The SoFi Center, built on the Palm Beach State College campus, is a colossal venue spanning nearly 250,000 square feet with a 75-foot-high apex that can accommodate approximately 1,600 people on match nights during TGL’s inaugural season. The course inside the venue will be integrated with various technologies, covering a surface area similar to a football field.
It was reported that the roof of the SoFi Center collapsed overnight due to significant disruption in the construction of the arena. No injuries were reported, but it is likely that the start of the TGL will be delayed.
TGL, which was announced in August 2022, is a made-for-TV golf league from Woods and McIlroy’s TMRW Sports venture and both golfers are committed to participating. The league will feature six four-player teams of PGA Tour players, including Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpartrick, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.
