The Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy virtual golf competition that was scheduled to start in January 2024 has been postponed until early 2025.

The TGL, described as an indoor “high-tech league,” experienced a delay after the facility in Florida, where the events were to be held, suffered damage due to a power outage which caused the collapse of the air-supported dome roof at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens.

While no injuries were reported, the 250,000 square feet facility suffered extensive harm, prompting a need for repairs and adjustments to the timeline for the venue’s launch.

“This decision came after reviewing short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the primetime sports television calendar,” TGL explained in a statement. “Despite this new timeline for the venue, we remain excited about the future of TGL and will continue to build excitement between now and the start of the season with our players, fans, and teams.”

The TGL has garnered significant traction, attracting 15 of the current world’s top 20 and having 24 PGA Tour players signed up for the inaugural season.

The league consists of six teams of four players each, including the Los Angeles Golf Club, Atlanta Drive Golf Club, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, TGL New York, and TGL San Francisco.

Notably, Tiger Woods is set to compete for Jupiter Links, while Rory McIlroy will represent Boston Common.

Each event is set to take place at the Sofi Center, will be broadcast live on primetime television in the US, and feature players wearing microphones, providing an engaging experience for fans.

Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner, expressed his confidence, stating, “Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players.”

Rory McIlroy echoed Woods’ sentiments, expressing mixed feelings of disappointment and excitement about the postponement, emphasizing the relief that no one was injured in the incident.
