Thompson ‘complete package,’ looks to score 50 goals for Sabres

Tage Thompson possesses incredible playmaking abilities, showcased by his elite hands and scoring prowess. Back in 2010-11, as a Bantam player in Alaska, he expertly netted 23 goals.

Thompson’s family regularly relocated due to his father Brent’s career as a well-traveled coach and former defenseman, who played 121 NHL games. Currently, Brent Thompson serves as an assistant for the Anaheim Ducks in his inaugural season.

Regardless of their whereabouts, Thompson consistently exhibited his scoring talent. He refused to let a notable five-inch growth spurt during his teenage years impede his gameplay. It became evident to him that his ability to handle the puck, shoot, and make instinctive decisions persisted, even after overcoming the awkward phase, which took a few years into his professional career.

“Once I surpassed that period of adolescence and became more comfortable, it became evident to me that my skills, including my hands, shot, and natural intuition, remained intact,” Thompson explained.

Watching taller players during his formative years served as a confirmation of this belief. He identified Evgeni Malkin, the towering 6-foot-3 center for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as his favorite player.

“I tried to model my game after him to some extent,” Thompson shared. “Once I experienced that growth spurt, I could better relate to him as a bigger individual. Perhaps others perceived a different role for me, but I understood my true capabilities. I simply refused to conform to expectations that didn’t align with my strengths.”

Thompson’s impressive NHL record speaks for itself. He ranked sixth in terms of goals scored last season and eighth overall since the start of the 2021-22 season, boasting a total of 89 goals. His renowned dexterity, skill set, and ability to find the back of the net are complemented by his towering 6-foot-6 frame, making him an even more formidable opponent to overcome.

“Very few players possess the exceptional skills that he possesses,” praised Sabres coach Don Granato. “When you combine his advantageous size, incredible hands, exceptional vision, and hockey IQ, it’s an incredibly powerful package.”
