Despite missing some time before reaching a new one-year agreement with the Chiefs, the production and impact of Jones remains highly impressive.
Unsurprisingly, Jones continues to showcase his excellence, a remarkable feat considering his two Super Bowl wins with the Chiefs and four Pro Bowl appearances.
Jones, who recorded an impressive 15.5 sacks in 2022 and earned his first All-Pro selection, has been a dominant force all along the defensive line. Despite being primarily classified as a defensive tackle, Next Gen Stats reveal that 60% of his third-down snaps this season have been played at the edge.
According to Coach Reid, “Somebody as talented as he is, you need to mix things up a bit. He demands attention, so moving him around helps slow him down. Jones possesses the athleticism and instinct to excel in different positions, providing us with valuable flexibility. It’s a strategy implemented by our defensive coordinator, Spags, and defensive line coach, Joe Cullen, allowing Jones to thrive both on the outside and inside.”
With Jones on the field, the Chiefs (5-1) have yet to experience a loss this season. Their defense has been superb, allowing just 14.7 points per game, the franchise’s best performance since 1997 according to NFL Research.
Since his return, Jones has shown no signs of rust. He is currently playing at an exceptional level and is closing in on his own record for consecutive games with a sack. His next challenge will be against the Chargers, a team he tormented with four sacks in two games during the 2022 season.
