‘These guys will fight again’

The future looks promising for Francis Ngannou, but also uncertain. The former UFC heavyweight champion has recently garnered significant attention in combat sports after an astonishing and impressive performance in his split decision boxing loss to Tyson Fury this past Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Despite calls for an immediate rematch, it appears that Fury will be facing Oleksandr Usyk next, while Ngannou will return to MMA.

Eric Nicksick, head coach at Xtreme Couture, strongly believes that a rematch between the two fighters will happen in the future.

“I think they have to, I really do,” Nicksick expressed during an interview with MMA Junkie Radio. “I think they have to. After that performance, how can you not? In the ring, John Fury, the entire Tyson Fury team was so gracious. Let’s not forget: They provided us with a great opportunity. We needed two to tango, and Tyson gifted us that opportunity. I felt like they thought they were doing us a favor, and we were trying to spoil that. I believe that Tyson Fury, being the competitor he is, surely wouldn’t want to miss out on that opportunity. I don’t want to say he didn’t take it seriously, but I don’t think he expected Francis to showcase such skills and accomplishments. He probably wants to reclaim his position and prove that he’s a vastly superior boxer. But I definitely think these two will face each other again.”

Few believed that Ngannou would not only emerge victorious, but also survive the scheduled 10 rounds against Fury. After all, this was Ngannou’s first boxing match, while Fury is the reigning WBC heavyweight champion with over 30 professional fights under his belt.

Yet, against all odds and critics, Ngannou gave Fury one of his toughest challenges. He managed to score the fight’s only knockdown and in the eyes of many, did enough to secure the decision victory.

Nicksick remained unaffected by the external criticism leading up to the fight.

“No one gave us a chance,” Nicksick stated. “Really, no one. I’m immune to it by now. We endured four or five months of people saying that Sean Strickland couldn’t beat Izzy, we couldn’t beat this guy. So, you just become immune to it.”
