If learning an NFL playbook is like rocket science, then it is just as well that Joshua Dobbs holds a degree in aerospace engineering.
Over the past year, the journeyman quarterback has had to acquaint himself with offensive plays for five different teams. During that time, he has made his first NFL start at the age of 27 and played for two different teams on consecutive Sundays.
Now at 28, Dobbs is given a chance to establish himself as a formidable NFL player and defy those who initially said “you can’t do both”.
‘Maximising my time on and off the field’
Dobbs, who earned awards both academically and on the field at Tennessee, decided on studying aerospace engineering, with a minor in business when he went to the University in 2013, despite being advised that starting quarterbacks seldom study such demanding majors. His determination led to him earning a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while achieving records on the football team, as well as pursuing an internship with an aerospace manufacturer.
After being picked with the 135th draft pick, Dobbs spent five years in brief appearances for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he used his time wisely, having an externship at NASA and working with the US Air Force. He also established a grant-making foundation and a clothing line intended to inspire others to defy expectations.
Life as a journeyman quarterback
After a year of moving between teams, including Arizona, where he registered 1,569 passing yards, eight touchdown passes and three rushing touchdowns, Dobbs now finds himself with the Minnesota Vikings. His trials and tribulations were also met with impressive performances, now earning him the nickname ‘the Passtronaut’.
‘Just a ball player having fun’
Dobbs’ newfound success in Minnesota has not only gained admiration for his backstory but also for the sheer enjoyment he exudes while playing. He is described as playing with confidence, without pressure, making plays and embracing his natural talents to bring a new dimension to the Vikings’ offense, despite the injuries they have incurred. The team is expected to make a strong push for the playoffs with their newfound momentum and determination.
