The FINAL College Football Playoff Rankings Before Selection Sunday | Alabama-Georgia Showdown | The Future for Texas A&M
As we approach the end of the week, the debate over whether Oregon or Texas will secure a spot in the College Football Playoff intensifies. If the two teams were to face off in a hypothetical matchup, the question arises – who would emerge victorious, the Ducks or the Longhorns?
Rece Davis revealed his pick for the theoretical game between No. 5 Oregon and No. 7 Texas on the ‘College GameDay Podcast’ this week. Upon meticulous analysis of both teams, he narrowly leaned towards the Longhorns.
“The resumes are very similar,” Davis remarked. “In that game? I would probably pick Texas to win the game – barely, maybe.”
However, this decision won’t be based solely on a head-to-head matchup. After the conference title games, we may find ourselves examining the teams’ bodies of work against each other in great detail.
Davis once again sided with Texas to make the playoff over Oregon, assuming that’s the question we’re facing on Sunday after both teams win their respective games.
With both teams boasting a 12-1 record and securing their conference championships, Davis views Texas’ September victory at Alabama as the key differentiator.
“Assuming both play well in their respective conference championship games, every data point has to matter when you’re this close at this point. If they get down the stretch and they both finish well and they get there? Probably the thing that would carry the day for me would be Texas won in Tuscaloosa,” said Davis.
According to Davis, “You’re splitting hairs at the margins. I would prefer them to lean on football judgement. But if football judgement says the two teams are equal? Then you have to get to the resume. I don’t think Oregon’s resume is outlandishly behind anybody’s. But I do think in a one singular data point that could make a difference? Texas’ win on the road in Tuscaloosa probably carries the day for me.”
While it’s unlikely that the Ducks and Longhorns will settle this debate on the field, the final ranking by the committee will soon reveal which team secures a spot in the College Football Playoff.
“That’s a good one. That’s going to be (a debate),” said Davis.
