The Anaheim Ducks made an impressive start by scoring two power-play goals on two of their first three shots, grabbing a quick 2-0 lead.
Troy Terry intercepted a clearing pass along the wall, skated into the right circle, and unleashed a wrist shot to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 3:46 of the first period.
He then extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:35 by capitalizing on a rebound just one second after a 4-on-4 situation ended.
“I think the worst thing is we get up 2-0 and we’re thinking, ‘OK, this might be easy,'” remarked Anaheim coach Greg Cronin.
However, the Arizona Coyotes fought back as Lawson Crouse narrowed the lead to 2-1 at 11:41 with a blistering one-timer assisted by J.J. Moser, who recorded two assists in the game. Then, Joseph Cooley tied it 2-2 at 14:51 with a breakaway goal after receiving a pass from Moser as he entered the Ducks’ zone with speed.
“With the way they play, if you’re not sharp and you’re not skating, they’re going to get quality chances and they scored on two of them in the first period,” Cronin acknowledged. “We’re lucky there wasn’t more.”
Crouse continued his scoring streak at 14:25 of the second period, securing a 3-2 lead for the Coyotes with a backhand goal after winning a battle for position in front of the crease, courtesy of a pass from Matias Maccelli.
Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny emphasized, “We had a tough start. We battled back. We came back in the game, and we even had a lead. We could expect to win in that type of situation.”
