Teresa Weatherspoon is here to ‘stir things up’ for the Sky, but the GM will be key to the recipe

CHICAGO — The 1999 WNBA Eastern Conference finals between the New York Liberty and Charlotte Sting were characterized by the absence of Teresa Weatherspoon, to the point where it became known as “no Teresa Weatherspoon, no win.” However, the Chicago Sky is hoping to change that narrative with the introduction of Weatherspoon as their new coach. During the team’s introductory news conference, co-owner and operating chairman Nadia Rawlinson emphasized that this moment marked the beginning of a new era for the Chicago Sky.

Rawlinson further discussed the significance of 2023 for the team, highlighting their increased valuation of $85 million, making them the second-most valuable franchise in the WNBA. Along with this financial growth, the team also expanded and diversified its ownership group by adding NBA legend Dwyane Wade and a group of women investors.

However, the 2023 season was filled with challenges for the Sky. They lost key players, their head coach and general manager left midseason, and they struggled to find their identity on and off the court. Hiring Weatherspoon showcases the team’s determination to rebound and find success once again.

Selected 10th overall by the New York Liberty in the inaugural WNBA draft in 1997, Weatherspoon played a crucial role in leading the team to the WNBA Finals in 1997 and 1999. Known for her defensive skills, she was the first-ever WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. After her playing career, Weatherspoon went on to coach in various leagues, including a stint with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Her coaching experience, combined with her success as a player, makes her a valuable asset to the Sky.
