Talks between the Yankees and the San Diego Padres regarding a potential trade for the talented Juan Soto have advanced to the point where player names are being exchanged, according to sources within the league. San Diego’s initial demands were understandably high, and the two teams are still far from reaching an agreement.
The Padres, who are in the early stages of figuring out their next steps following the passing of their beloved owner, Peter Seidler, have just begun considering what to do with Soto.
As SNY reported, the Yanks and Padres had a preliminary conversation about Soto early in the offseason. These discussions have continued, according to sources.
Although the specific players involved have not been disclosed, it is rumored that the Padres are eyeing top prospects/rookies such as Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe, as well as young major league pitchers in the Michael King/Clarke Schmidt category, and more. This is typical behavior at the outset of trade negotiations for a player of Soto’s caliber. It is also standard for the Yankees to initially refuse, while keeping the conversation open.
The Yankees see Soto as an ideal addition to their team, although they acknowledge that Yankee Stadium’s large left field requires a strong defensive player, which Soto is not. They are now weighing what they would be willing to offer for a one-year deal.
There is little expectation that a team acquiring Soto this offseason would be able to secure a contract extension before free agency. Trading for him would be similar to picking up a rental player at the July trade deadline.
Nevertheless, even if Soto only stays for a year, he could make a significant impact for the Yankees if he helps the team reach the World Series. For this reason, New York is still exploring the option of a trade and hoping to find common ground.
