Svi Mykhailiuk Impresses for Celtics in Preseason Game Against Knicks

Joe Mazzulla took a different approach for the Boston Celtics’ second preseason game against the New York Knicks, giving the backups a chance to shine.

Boston’s starting lineup consisted of Payton Pritchard, Dalano Banton, Sam Hauser, Oshae Brissett, and Luke Kornet. The bench players, including Svi Mykhailiuk, also received significant playing time.

Mykhailiuk, who joined the Celtics this summer, is competing for minutes alongside Brissett, Banton, Hauser, and others.

“Every player brings something unique to the table,” Mykhailiuk stated after the game. “Dalano is a skilled point guard, Oshae is a defensive force who’s aggressive on offense and can make open threes. Each player’s skillset is valuable for the team.”

Mykhailiuk had an impressive performance, scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. He also contributed three rebounds and one assist.

Throughout his NBA career, Mykhailiuk has established himself as a top-notch three-point shooter. In his previous stint with the Charlotte Hornets, he shot 40.4% from deep on 4.7 attempts per game.

“In Mazzulla’s offensive system, everyone is encouraged to take open shots,” Mykhailiuk explained. “That mentality benefits the team, and we must all be ready to seize those opportunities.”

While Mykhailiuk showcased his shooting ability against the Knicks, he also demonstrated his versatility in other areas. He was comfortable handling the ball, creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. This ability sets him apart from players like Brissett and Hauser, while also giving him an edge over Banton and Jordan Walsh.

However, Mykhailiuk had some defensive lapses against New York. He was overly aggressive on closeouts, allowing his opponents to drive past him with simple pump fakes.

But it was Mykhailiuk’s athleticism that garnered attention. The 26-year-old delivered impressive dunks, including an incredible alley-oop and a monster two-hand putback jam.

Mykhailiuk’s athleticism gives him more offensive versatility, providing the Boston Celtics with additional options when he’s on the court. Nevertheless, he understands his role in the team’s offense.

“I adjust my game based on how the main players perform,” Mykhailiuk commented on adapting to Boston. “It’s crucial to understand their style of play and build my own game accordingly.”

With the Celtics prioritizing star acquisitions over depth this summer, opportunities opened up for players like Mykhailiuk. With his skillset and mindset, he has a genuine chance of earning a spot in the rotation.
