Factory driver for Honda, Nojiri, drove the title-winning RB16B at Mobility Resort Motegi. This run commemorated Honda’s yearly end-of-the-year celebrations and was described as a “reward” for Nojiri after his recent Super Formula championship wins.
Competing with Red Bull’s blue-and-black livery, Nojiri was in contention for the title until the very end. Honda noted that he could have secured a third consecutive crown if it wasn’t for a missed round earlier in the year due to a collapsed run.
Following this run, Nojiri confirmed his continued excitement for Super Formula and SUPER GT. He expressed doubt about finding the same level of enjoyment in an overseas category despite expressing interest in taking on new challenges abroad.
The RB16B he drove took Max Verstappen to his inaugural F1 title in 2021 after a season-long battle with Lewis Hamilton. This historic duel culminated in a dramatic – albeit controversial – showdown in Abu Dhabi.
He is scheduled to drive the car again on Sunday as part of the “Red Bull Racing Honda RB16B x TEAM MUGEN SF23 Special collaboration”. This will also include Red Bull/Honda junior Ayumu Iwasa, who will team up with Nojiri at Mugen next year.
In 2024, Nojiri will pursue a dual campaign in Japan, driving with Mugen in SF and alongside ARTA in SUPER GT. Toshiki Oyu’s future at Honda remains uncertain, potentially leaving a spot for a new team-mate in the latter championship next year.
