Recruitment by Proxy: A Remarkable Golf Journey at New Paltz High School
It all began as an inadvertent recruitment by proxy. John Goodermote, a sixth-grader at the time, was just starting to dabble in golf and learn its basics at Apple Greens Golf Course. Little did he know that a friend, Nick Puleo, saw potential in him that could be harnessed for competitive golf. Puleo, a standout varsity player, convinced John to take the sport more seriously and join the team.
Meanwhile, John’s little brother, Loyal Goodermote, watched in awe as his older brother practiced and improved. As a young sibling, Loyal couldn’t wait to follow in John’s footsteps. Two long years later, in the seventh grade, Loyal finally became eligible to join the golf team.
“When John made the team, he got his mind set on making the team,” said Lon Goodermote, their father.
Loyal learned the fundamentals from Larry Furey, the pro at New Paltz Golf Course. Equipped with a cheap set of clubs, Loyal took off on his own golf journey. And now, he stands among the best golfers in Section 9.
Last week, Loyal Goodermote made a name for himself by winning the Mid Hudson Athletic League championship. With a 2-under 69, he secured the title at Apple Greens Golf Course, narrowly edging out his teammate Stephen Carr.
But there is more to this team than individual success. The New Paltz golfers have friendly competition amongst themselves, constantly pushing each other to improve. Despite their drive to outperform one another, they genuinely support and celebrate each other’s achievements.
The team’s coach, Kieran Bell, expressed his pride in his talented players. “It was a special day for our team; one we won’t forget for a long time,” he said.
Loyal’s victory in the league championship is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to his dedication. He spent the fall season diligently working on his putting, an area that had posed challenges for him previously. This tournament showcased his improved skills as he birdied four holes and sank a clutch five-footer on the last hole to secure the win.
“We’re tremendously proud of what he’s achieved, and of the person he is,” said Lon Goodermote, Loyal’s father. Loyal excels not only in golf but also academically and musically, playing trombone for the school band.
Loyal and his teammates have shown dedication beyond the regular season by joining Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston. Though it requires a 35-minute drive, they believe the more challenging course will benefit their development.
Bell recognizes the character and commitment that have kept New Paltz in contention year after year. He attributes their success to the players’ love for the game, their dedication to improvement, and the availability of quality courses in the area.
Looking ahead, Loyal Goodermote understands the responsibility that comes with being the team’s veteran player, especially with three key members set to graduate next year. He knows he will have to step up as a leader and continue to improve his game.
As Loyal Goodermote continues his ascent in the golf world, his footsteps serve as an inspiration to others who may follow.
