Steelers to wear Throwback Jerseys this week

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to don their throwback jerseys as they prepare to face the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium this week.

The jerseys are adorned with block letters and numbers, reminiscent of the iconic look from the team’s heyday in the 1970s.

This marks the fourth occasion that the team will wear these throwback jerseys, having previously done so in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

Notably, the Steelers secured victories while wearing the throwback jerseys in 2018 and 2019, triumphing over the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams, respectively.

“I think it’s really cool,” linebacker T.J. Watt remarked. “It means a lot that we can wear the jerseys they wore, and being a part of that tradition is awesome.”

“Those guys still take a lot of pride in what they did, and we take a lot of pride in being able to carry on that legacy and play for the Steelers. That is what makes this organization so special, the true tradition,” Watt added.

Last year, the Steelers marked the 50th Anniversary of the Immaculate Reception by wearing the throwback jerseys and clinching a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

The game saw quarterback Kenny Pickett connecting with George Pickens for a game-winning 14-yard touchdown in the final 46 seconds.

“The Steelers have such a rich history, and we want to continue that tradition,” Pickett expressed. “It will be another special game on Sunday.”

Linebacker Watt and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward have embraced the opportunity to showcase the throwback jerseys, aiming to honor the team’s illustrious history.

“I like the little differences, the little nuances, but it’s similar to our standard jersey because that is the tradition we hold,” Heyward commented. “We’re just running with it. We are trying to leave the legacy the way they did.”
