The rookie corner showcased his physicality by successfully impeding Hopkins at the line of scrimmage. Porter employed a press coverage strategy in 20 out of Hopkins’ 26 routes, according to NGS data. Although he did draw a defensive hold penalty that prolonged the Titans’ final drive, Porter’s aggressive style effectively hindered Hopkins, resulting in a narrow 1.6 yards per target separation.

“D-Hop is undoubtedly one of the most skilled players in the league, and he has been for quite some time. I have a lot of respect for him, but as a young player, I need to prove myself,” Porter stated. “He kept complaining about calls, and I couldn’t help but respond, ‘You’re the one initiating contact, so why do you expect favorable calls?’

The Steelers typically don’t assign their cornerbacks to shadow specific receivers, especially rookies like Porter. However, as Porter has been given more opportunities this season, he has demonstrated his capability. Over the past three weeks, Porter’s playing time has significantly increased after not exceeding 25 snaps in a game during the first five weeks. Moreover, he has excelled in his first two career starts. Prior to Thursday Night Football (TNF), Porter held the distinction of forcing a tight window throw on 63.6% of targets in man coverage in 2023, the highest in the NFL among players with a minimum of 10 targets, according to NGS data. He continued to prove his prowess as a formidable cover corner against Hopkins in Week 9.

“I just need to stay focused, keep putting in the effort, and work diligently,” Porter emphasized. “Some rookies tend to experience a slump after reaching their peak, but I’ll keep grinding. As I mentioned before, I’ll continue to stay dedicated and look ahead to the next week.”

The rookie’s agenda is clear: Work relentlessly, maintain discipline, and effectively contain opposing wide receivers.
