Victor Wembanyama’s first game at Madison Square Garden turned out to be the worst of his young career, despite the New York Knicks’ 126-105 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night. The No. 1 draft pick was in danger of having one of his worst games before scoring eight points in the fourth quarter, finishing with 14 points on 4-for-14 shooting.
Wembanyama, a 7-foot-3 center, missed his first seven shots and had more airballs (2) than field goals through three quarters. Jalen Brunson scored 25 points for the Knicks, while RJ Barrett added 24 points and six assists, and Julius Randle contributed 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Immanuel Quickley scored 19 off the bench and Mitchell Robinson spearheaded the strong defensive effort against Wembanyama with eight points and 12 rebounds.
The San Antonio Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan had 16 points and six rebounds. The Spurs, after a brutal loss to the Indiana Pacers, lost to the Knicks, dropping their third straight game.
The New York Knicks managed to block out the hype surrounding Wembanyama’s arrival and focus on the game. While Wembanyama received loud cheers before the game, he also faced jeers from the crowd during it.
Despite the tough game, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich called it a learning experience for Wembanyama, who at 19 years old is still learning about the NBA.
Wembanyama took and missed the Spurs’ first three shots, sparking the Knicks’ fast start, and it was 13-0 before the Spurs made their first shot. Wembanyama’s struggles helped grow the Knicks’ lead and the crowd erupted in chants of “Overrated! Overrated!” after a frustrated Wembanyama took a swipe at a Knicks player.
Devin Vassell made a return to the game after missing the previous two games due to injury.
In their next games, Spurs will host Minnesota, while the Knicks will host Charlotte.
