Dean Burmester’s flawless final-round performance at the Houghton Golf Club secured a 3-shot victory at the Joburg Open, as overnight leader Thriston Lawrence faltered on Sunday.
Burmester’s remarkable round, which included six birdies, culminated in an 18-under 262 total, allowing him to overcome a 3-shot deficit and clinch his third DP World Tour victory, marking his first win in 2½ years.
“I was a little rusty coming in, but my team did such a great job getting me ready for this week … and it paid off,” said Burmester, reflecting on his win. “I knew I had to do something special, and fortunately I was able to do that.”
The 34-year-old South African finished ahead of compatriot Darren Fichardt, who secured second place with a total of 265, including an eagle in his final-round 64. The leaderboard was heavily dominated by South African players, with eight of the top 11 being home players.
Defending champion Dan Bradbury from England claimed third place, finishing five shots behind Burmester after a solid final-round 64.
All three top finishers qualified for The Open at Royal Troon in July.
Despite leading after the first and third rounds, Lawrence struggled on the final day, dropping 4 strokes in his first five holes and finishing with a 5-over 75, ultimately landing in a tie for seventh at 10 under.
The Joburg Open serves as the kickoff for the European tour season, consisting of three consecutive tournaments in South Africa that are co-sanctioned by the country’s Sunshine Tour.
