LAS VEGAS – Sodiq Yusuff acknowledges the significance of the moment, but he is confident that he is prepared for it.
On Saturday, at UFC Fight Night 230, Yusuff (13-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) will headline for the first time in his UFC career as he faces off against Edson Barboza (23-11 MMA, 17-11 UFC) at the UFC Apex.
“It feels like the natural progression,” Yusuff expressed during a pre-fight news conference with MMA Junkie and other reporters on Wednesday. “At the beginning, I couldn’t quite believe it. But as time went on, it just felt like this was meant to be. I believe I have spent enough time here, and I have garnered enough attention to earn this opportunity. When Saturday arrives, all I need to do is put on a great performance and show, so they will give me more chances like this.”
Yusuff is humbled by the opportunity to fight a respected veteran like Barboza, who possesses a reputation that is widely recognized and admired. Barboza has accumulated 28 UFC fights and an impressive highlight reel that most fighters can only dream of.
“Originally, they offered me the chance to fight him in Abu Dhabi, but I encountered passport issues that prevented me from accepting it,” Yusuff revealed. “So when they presented the opportunity again, I immediately said yes. Edson is a legend, and having his name on my resume would be an honor.”
