Simon Holmstrom ready to show what he can do on Islanders’ top line

When the
Islanders hit the ice at UBA Arena for Saturday night’s season opening matchup with the Buffalo Sabres, their top line will have a bit of a different look from last year.

Head coach
Lane Lambert is giving
Simon Holmstrom an opportunity to show what he can do on the right wing alongside stars
Mathew Barzal and
Bo Horvat to begin the campaign.

“Since the beginning of rookie camp, he has showcased his skills,” Lambert said. “We witnessed a lot of positive attributes last year, and he was really finding his groove. He has progressed further and has been a great addition to the team.”

“Bo and I enjoy having him on our line,” Barzal added. “He possesses size and exceptional puck protection skills. Among our team, his ability to guard the puck is unmatched. Although he has experienced some ups and downs, I am excited to see him become a permanent fixture in our lineup.”

Holmstrom faced challenges during his rookie season, posting just six goals, three assists, and a -4 rating in an average of 11:05 of ice time over 50 NHL games.

However, after an offseason of hard work, the 22-year-old exhibited a transformed style of play in preseason action alongside his new linemates. Holmstrom made an impact with a goal, two assists, and five shot attempts across New York’s four tune-up games.

With his impressive performance, he now faces high expectations for the upcoming season. While there is pressure, Holmstrom’s confidence is soaring as he plays alongside two All-Stars.

“I’m trying not to overthink it,” he said. “They are two incredible players. I just aim to showcase my abilities, contribute to their success, and help the team in any way I can.”
