After six years, the Siena Heights women’s soccer team has made its way back into the NAIA tournament. Their regular season was nothing short of memorable. After finishing 13-0-5, the Saints shared the WHAC regular season title with Aquinas. During the selection show Monday afternoon, SHU ended its playoff drought.
The first round of the playoffs will be against Trinity Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday in Spring Arbor. The winner will then face the second-ranked and defending national champion Cougars on Saturday.
Despite a shootout loss to Lawrence Tech in the WHAC semifinals back on Nov. 4, SHU had a successful season, finishing 14-0-6. The 14 wins mark the most wins since 2015 and the first undefeated season in program history.
The team was honored with WHAC Coach of the Year, awarded to its leader of 23 seasons, Scott Oliver. Additionally, sophomore midfielder Parker Cheney was named WHAC Midfielder of the Year.
Cheney stood out with 10 goals, leading the team in both goals and assists. She was accompanied by First Team All-WHAC selections, senior forward Marissa Young and senior defenseman MacKenzie Stenzel. Additionally, junior forward Sarah Ammon and senior goalkeeper Caitlyn Harwood, with a .909 save percentage, earned Second Team All-WHAC honors. Freshman defenseman Kailey Lambert was named to the All-WHAC Newcomer Team.
SHU will face the Trolls of Trinity Christian. The Trolls held a record of 12-3-4, marking a promising contest in the upcoming game.
