Siegemund and Zvonareva win Nanchang title and qualify for WTA Finals

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA – The WTA has announced that Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva, as a doubles team, have earned a spot in the GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun. This achievement secures the eighth and final place, completing the lineup for the prestigious season-ending tournament.

This will be the first time for both Siegemund and Zvonareva to compete in the doubles event at the WTA Finals. They will join the other qualifying teams, including Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, Demi Schuurs and Desirae Krawczyk, Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara, Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe, and Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez. Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend will serve as the alternate team in Cancun, Mexico.

Siegemund and Zvonareva secured their qualification by winning their third title of the season at the WTA 250 Jiangxi Open in Nanchang. This victory followed their earlier triumphs at the WTA 250 Ningbo Open and the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open (Washington DC) in August, making it three titles in the last three months. Additionally, they reached the final of the US Open, the semifinals of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open, and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, further strengthening their qualification hopes.

If Zvonareva, who gave birth to her daughter Evelina in 2016, wins at the WTA Finals, she will become the first mother to achieve this since Cara Black in 2014. Siegemund, on the other hand, could become the first-ever German champion in doubles at the WTA Finals.

Although this is Zvonareva’s first appearance in the doubles event, she is no stranger to the WTA Finals, having qualified in singles five times before (in 2004, and from 2008 to 2011).

Earlier this month, the singles lineup for the GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun was confirmed. The top 8 singles players and doubles teams on the Race to the WTA Finals will compete in a round-robin format. The singles champion will be awarded the WTA Finals Billie Jean King Trophy, while the doubles champions will earn the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Trophy.
