The final College Football Playoff positions are still within reach, with Texas having an outside opportunity to secure a spot if it emerges victorious in the Big 12 championship game and if certain outcomes swing its way the next two days.
One scenario involves Alabama defeating Georgia in the SEC championship game, resulting in Texas making it in over Alabama due to the Longhorns’ 34-24 win over the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa earlier in the season. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey likened the chance of no SEC team making the playoff to a famous scene from the movie “Dumb and Dumber.”
“I’d say, more like one out of a million.”
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”
In this scenario, Texas is Lloyd while the committee is Mary.
“People who know and understand football don’t have a doubt about our status. You can look this year. Sure we lost some nonconference games but this is not a week evaluation, this is a season evaluation,” Sankey said on the Pat McAfee show.
The committee’s protocol includes head-to-head matchups as one of the tiebreakers for determining playoff inclusion. Sankey seems to believe that Texas’ early season win would hold little significance if Alabama triumphs over the top-ranked Georgia to secure the SEC title.
An SEC team has never missed the playoff. The only time an SEC team didn’t make the CFP national championship game was in 2014, when Alabama lost to Ohio State in the semifinals.
Nonetheless, the committee would be faced with a nightmarish scenario if a one-loss conference champion fails to make the playoff. To prevent this, Texas would need to secure a victory on Saturday, while Florida State, down to its third-string quarterback, would have to lose to Louisville, thereby opening up a spot for the Longhorns to secure a place.
