Some National Football League players are notorious for living extravagant lifestyles.

However, San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy is an exception. He shares rent with a teammate and drives a Toyota Sequoia SUV, as he mentioned on NBC’s “TODAY” show. Purdy’s off-the-field life is simple and modest.

Purdy is currently playing on his rookie contract, earning $870,000 this year as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. While this may seem like a substantial amount, it’s important to note that NFL careers are often short-lived, and Purdy experienced an injury last year that could have ended his career.

Living in San Francisco is expensive, with a median monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment or condo reaching $2,993, which is 137% higher than the national median, according to Zillow data.

Purdy’s choice of car, the Toyota Sequoia, is not a cheap vehicle. However, it’s not a million-dollar sports car either. The exact details of Purdy’s vehicle, including its age and whether it was purchased new or used, are unknown.

While some professional athletes are known for their extravagant spending, others prioritize saving their earnings. Retired NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski, for example, saved his gameday salaries and lived off endorsement money during his playing days to secure his post-football future.

Kawhi Leonard, a star player in the National Basketball Association, still drives his 20-year-old SUV from high school despite earning millions of dollars playing for the San Antonio Spurs.

Even in baseball, New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole continues to drive his 2006 Toyota Tacoma truck after signing a $324 million contract. He sees no need to replace it as it still serves its purpose.

As Purdy progresses in his career, he can look forward to a raise once his rookie contract expires. Starting quarterbacks on non-rookie contracts currently earn an average of $38.06 million per year, according to Over the Cap data.
