Sampson Zheng breaks Royal Melbourne course record, leads at Asia-Pacific Amateur

Sampson Zheng defied the gusty winds and showcased his pursuit of perfection.

In the 2023 Asia-Pacific Amateur held at Royal Melbourne in Australia, the talented senior golfer from California recorded an impressive performance, carding one of only two under-par rounds of the day. Zheng’s exceptional play saw him shoot a remarkable 6-under 65, breaking the amateur Composite Course record. With 18 holes remaining, he now holds a lead and has the opportunity to secure major exemptions.

Starting the day tied for 13th and six shots behind the leaders, Zheng’s exceptional round included an eagle, six birdies, and two bogeys. As a result, he currently enjoys a significant four-shot lead, bringing him closer to a life-changing victory.

Zheng’s prowess on the big stage is no surprise, as earlier this year, he won the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball title and tied for medalist honors at the 2023 U.S. Amateur. However, his performance at the Asia-Pacific Amateur stands out among the rest.

Reflecting on his round, Zheng said, “It feels really nice. I mean, to be able to shoot 65 like I did in the conditions like today, where everyone else is struggling, it feels even more special.”

Adding to his impressive golf resume, Zheng was part of the winning Asia-Pacific team that triumphed at the Bonallack Trophy in Spain earlier this year. Notably, Sir Michael Bonallack, whose name adorns the Composite Course record at Royal Melbourne, held the previous record. Additionally, Kazuma Kobori, the first-round leader, also tied the 5-under 66 mark on Thursday.

With a four-shot lead, Zheng is currently ahead of local favorite Billy Dowling, who has secured four wins since August and is making his first appearance in the Asia-Pacific Amateur.

The tournament winner will earn coveted exemptions into the 2024 Masters and the Open Championship at Royal Troon. They will also receive exemption from qualifying for the Amateur Championship.
