Saltleaf Golf Preserve opens in Estero

Saltleaf Golf Preserve is all set for its grand opening, inviting golfers to enjoy the newly renovated 18-hole course, previously known as Raptor Bay Golf Club on Monday.

“What started as a renovation project has turned into a complete transformation of the course,” said Craig Klingensmith, vice president of development for London Bay, the course’s owner. “If you’ve played Raptor Bay before, you won’t recognize anything when you play this course. It’s a whole new experience.”

This $25 million renovation is part of London Bay Development Group’s project near the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs.

Formerly the 55-acre back nine of Raptor Bay, this space is now home to two 22-story condominium buildings, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Estero Bay, and Saltleaf Marina, both built by Naples-based London Bay.

Raymond Floyd, a four-time major winner on the PGA Tour and golf course designer, has come out of retirement to redesign the course he originally built 22 years ago.

Mark Wilson and Raptor Bay Superintendent Jason Brod retained a good relationship with Floyd, which led to the redesign agreement.

“I get a second chance to use the philosophy I did with Raptor Bay,” Floyd said at the groundbreaking in July 2022.Originally designed to be a resort course, Raptor Bay was meant for faster play and less difficulty, but the new course offers a more challenging layout. The course length has increased to 7,075 yards, with a change from par 71 to 72, and seven different tee box options, providing various hole lengths.Saltleaf transformed Raptor Bay’s hole No. 10 into a nine-hole short course, promoting a casual dress code and a relaxed atmosphere to encourage family play. It also provides an environment for serious golfers to practice their short game, with holes ranging from 50 to 135 yards. Both courses are open to the public, with green fees ranging from $229 for a round in November to $349 in February. The nine-hole course costs $79.The course’s opening was delayed due to Hurricane Ian which set back the renovation work. Many workers lost their homes during the storm, affecting the timeline for the project.Despite the delays, the course emerged relatively unscathed from the storm, except for the loss of some newly planted oaks. London Bay is moving forward with plans to open The Ritz-Carlton Residences and Saltleaf Marina upon completion in 2025.Reference
