Since being drafted as the first overall pick in the 2022 draft by the Jaguars, Travon Walker may not have recorded impressive numbers. However, this fact did not go unnoticed by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who specifically mentioned the linebacker during a press conference on Tuesday.
Despite Josh Allen leading the Jaguars with seven sacks in the first seven games of the season, Walker has contributed 2.5 sacks while playing alongside him. Tomlin emphasized that these sack totals do not accurately represent Walker’s impact. He acknowledged that the Steelers will need to be vigilant in handling both players.
“To effectively deal with their big guys, we must excel at managing their presence,” Tomlin stated, as reported by John Shipley of SI.com. “The edge rushers command significant attention. As a tandem, Josh Allen and Walker wreak havoc. Sacks alone do not adequately convey the havoc that Walker creates. I recognized this while analyzing his performance leading up to the draft. He is a disruptive force, known for his aggressive play-style. He is a wrecking ball.”
Tomlin also emphasized the importance of the Steelers executing their offensive strategies consistently and efficiently in order to regain their momentum. However, achieving this will be challenging if they are unable to contain Walker’s destructive abilities during their upcoming game.
