Rory McIlroy, the renowned 34-year-old golfer, has expressed his interest in investing in Manchester United. Despite his desire, he revealed that he hasn’t had the opportunity to do so yet.
McIlroy is a part of a group of sports stars, including Anthony Joshua, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Juan Mata, who have recently invested in the Formula One team Alpine.
Currently, United is on the verge of selling a 25 percent stake in the club to British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
As a dedicated United fan, McIlroy has expressed his willingness to make a small minority investment in the club if the chance arises.
In an interview with Sky Sports, McIlroy stated, “Sports team ownership was once limited to private equity and individuals with significant wealth. However, nowadays, sports stars are becoming more astute and using their money wisely.”
“I would love to own a tiny percentage of the club I passionately supported as a boy,” McIlroy added.
Reflecting on Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a 25 percent stake in United, McIlroy stated, “I would have loved to own 0.00001 percent of Manchester United like Jim Ratcliffe did. If another opportunity arises, I will definitely consider it. However, as of now, no such opportunity has come my way.”
Although McIlroy hasn’t been approached about investing in United, he disclosed that there were talks about him investing in one of their primary rivals.
“There is Tom Brady at Birmingham and a few golfers like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas who invested with the 49ers Group and now own a small portion of Leeds. They asked me if I wanted to join, but as a die-hard Man United fan, I couldn’t entertain the idea,” McIlroy explained.
Praising Sir Jim’s accomplishments, McIlroy expressed his excitement as a fan, saying, “Sir Jim has an impressive track record, and all United supporters should be thrilled about the possibilities if he is granted full authority for the club’s sporting decisions. I am certainly excited.”
On Saturday night, United emerged victorious against Sheffield United, placing them in the eighth position in the Premier League.
