Intrigue Surrounds Jon Rahm’s Decision to Back Out of TGL

When Jon Rahm made the surprising announcement that he was withdrawing his support for TGL, the indoor golf league led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, it sparked speculation about the Spaniard’s potential move from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf.

However, McIlroy has a different view on the matter.

The four-time major champion addressed the media at a press conference for his TGL team, Boston Common, on Monday and expressed his belief that Rahm has no intention of leaving the PGA Tour.

“I recently spoke with Jon, and I would be extremely surprised if he were to make that decision,” McIlroy stated confidently. “I have a strong belief that Jon is committed to being a PGA Tour player.”

Rahm, who is the reigning Masters champion, withdrew from TGL last Thursday after being named in the league’s initial roster of 24 players.

In a message posted on social media, Rahm wrote, “I regret to inform you that I will not be participating in the inaugural TGL season. Although I believe it is a fantastic opportunity, it requires a level of commitment that I am unable to offer at this time. I wish everyone involved the best of luck, and may the best team win!”

TGL officials issued a statement expressing their understanding and respect for Rahm’s decision.

In contrast to McIlroy, Rahm has not been as outspoken in his criticism of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League. He has even advocated for fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia’s inclusion in future Ryder Cup teams, despite Garcia’s defection to LIV. However, Rahm clarified in June 2022 that financial gain was not his motive for playing golf, and he deemed LIV’s 54-hole, no-cut format unworthy.

“I have always prioritized the historical significance and legacy of the PGA Tour,” Rahm explained. “Winning the Memorial Championship, Arnold Palmer’s event at Bay Hill, or tournaments like L.A. and Torrey Pines – these prestigious venues hold great meaning for me.

“My allegiance lies with the PGA Tour.”

In June, the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and the Saudi Public Investment Fund reached a preliminary agreement that would involve funding from the Saudi body for a new profit-oriented venture. However, specific details remain scarce, and a definitive agreement is expected to be reached by December 31.
