Rory McIlroy has officially resigned from the board of the PGA Tour, marking the end of an era as he steps down from his role.
Amid the Tour’s fight against LIV Golf and its Saudi Arabian supporters in recent years, McIlroy quickly rose to prominence as the face of the Tour. His decision to resign from the board on Tuesday night comes as a significant development for the organization.
“Given the extraordinary time and effort that Rory — and all of his fellow player directors — have invested in the tour during this unprecedented, transformational period in our history, we certainly understand and respect his decision to step down in order to focus on his game and his family,” Commissioner Jay Monahan and Edward D. Herlihy, the board’s chairman, said in a statement,
“[McIlroy was] instrumental in helping shape the success of the Tour, and his willingness to thoughtfully voice his opinions has been especially impactful.”
McIlroy cited personal and professional commitments as the primary reasons for his resignation, emphasizing the need to refocus on his game and family. He said this week in Dubai that the commitment to the board had exceeded his initial expectations.
