Rory McIlroy has stepped down from his position as a player director on the PGA Tour policy board, citing personal and professional commitments, as stated in a statement released by the organization.
McIlroy’s decision came amidst discussions to solidify a proposed agreement involving the PGA Tour, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and the DP World Tour, which created widespread ripples in the golfing community when it was announced in June.
This comes after McIlroy expressed “mixed emotions” about the potential partnership, having been a vocal critic of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.
Despite these developments, McIlroy has highlighted his optimism for the future of professional golf, stating, “The professional game has never been stronger or healthier from a financial standpoint.”
However, McIlroy’s tenure was not without its challenges, as he commented, “the game of professional golf has been in flux for the last two years. Again, the overall game I think is in really good shape.”
It is noteworthy that McIlroy’s term was due to end in 2024, and according to the “PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations,” his successor will be elected by the remaining player directors to serve the unexpired term.
