The Thanksgiving holiday week saw the conclusion of several basketball tournaments, including Auburn’s Fred VanVleet Classic and Boylan’s tournament. Notably, the out-of-state teams at Auburn’s tournament, including Memphis Douglass, Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Legacy of Spring, Texas, impressed with a combined record of 8-0. In contrast, Boylan dedicated its refurbished main gym floor as “Steve Goers Court,” in honor of the league’s all-time winningest coach.
Auburn (0-4) had a challenging week but showcased determination with two overtime losses and a fiercely competitive schedule. Despite this, coach Bryan Ott expressed enthusiasm for the success of the FVV Classic and the possibility of its return in the future. Notably, Boylan’s Rakim Chaney is on track to potentially join Zach Couper as the second NIC-10 player to average 20 points, displaying an impressive average of 22.3 points.
Auburn’s performance raised questions about their overall physicality and performance under pressure, with Ott emphasizing the team’s need to focus on defense and consistency throughout games. The team faced setbacks in crucial turnovers and offensive execution but ultimately aims to improve and surpass the performance of other championship-caliber teams.
Finally, Belvidere North and Freeport Aquin’s girls’ basketball team have become strong competitors on the scene. Belvidere North’s exceptional performance at the FVV Classic, including a narrow loss against Chicago Perspectives, demonstrates their potential and growth. Meanwhile, Freeport Aquin boasts an aggressive 2-3 zone defense and talented players, positioning the team as a new contender in girls’ basketball. Orangeville continued its success with strong defense and standout players, setting a new precedent for the program.
