Red Bull has been sponsoring the Honda team since 2006, but it was only in 2015 that their logos made an appearance on the bike’s livery. This was two years after Marquez’s debut in MotoGP and his subsequent title win in his rookie season.
However, with Marquez announcing his departure from Honda to join Ducati at the Gresini team at the end of the 2023 season, Red Bull is reportedly planning to end its partnership with the team this year.
Not only does Red Bull have the option to terminate the deal upon Marquez’s exit, but the contract also includes a clause that prevents the works Honda team from carrying advertising from any other energy drink brand until 2025.
In addition to Red Bull’s potential departure, there are reports that other partners’ contributions to Honda could be reduced. While Repsol is expected to continue with Honda until the end of 2024, it could mark the end of a 30-year partnership.
Despite these changes, losing Red Bull’s sponsorship and reducing other brands’ contributions will not pose a significant short-term problem for Honda, as they will save 20 million euros by not paying Marquez’s wages in 2024. This will provide financial relief and support the manufacturer’s bike development efforts.
