Rasmus Sandin’s Growth and Development with the Capitals: A Journey to Maturity

When Spencer Carbery coached Rasmus Sandin with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sandin was a third-pair defenseman who was sometimes a healthy scratch without a path to a larger role. With a logjam of defensemen in Toronto, Sandin was traded to Washington in February. Three months later, Carbery joined him when he was hired as the Capitals’ new coach.

Sixteen games into the duo being reunited in Washington, Sandin is playing the second-most minutes at even strength in the NHL, averaging 21:53 each night — just six seconds less than his former Toronto teammate, Morgan Rielly. Sandin is also second on the Capitals in overall ice time at 23:37, trailing John Carlson’s average of only because Carlson plays more on special teams.

The 23-year-old Sandin believes that he can be a reliable top-pair defenseman in the NHL. With Washington, he has a chance to prove it.
