Artemi Panarin continued his incredible season-opening point streak, extending it to 14 games with two assists while Chris Kreider contributed a goal and an assist for the Rangers (11-2-1), who remain unbeaten in regulation during this streak with a 9-0-1 record. Goaltender Jonathan Quick was stellar, making 25 saves to secure the win.
Despite Elvis Merzlikins’ 37 saves for the Blue Jackets (4-7-4), including 16 in the third period, they still suffered their fifth consecutive loss (0-3-2). Erik Gudbranson also provided two assists in a losing effort.
“Right now, we can’t afford any mistakes,” remarked Columbus forward Sean Kuraly. “It’s a tough battle for us to earn two points. Until we figure it out, we’ll have to learn to navigate within these slim margins and keep fighting through this rough patch.”
Justin Danforth gave Columbus an early 1-0 lead at 16:26 of the first period, redirecting Gudbranson’s shot from the right boards into the net. However, Kreider responded for the Rangers, tying the game 1-1 at 18:46 with a powerful one-timer from the right circle, marking his 10th goal of the season.
Alexis Lafreniere then propelled the Rangers ahead 2-1 at 11:27 of the second period with a sensational one-timer from the left circle off a cross-ice feed from Vincent Trocheck.
It was Panarin’s secondary assist on the play, further adding to his impressive point streak, now totaling 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists). This achievement ties him with Rod Gilbert (1972-73) for the longest season-opening point streak in Rangers history.
“It honestly means a lot to me,” expressed Panarin. “It’s a great feeling. I appreciate my teammates and the unwavering support of the fans.”
Adam Fantilli managed to tie the game 2-2 at 12:35 of the second, snapping a shot blocker side from the right circle after stealing the puck in the neutral zone.
