New York Rangers’ Kaapo Kakko Exits Game with Scary Leg Injury
Article by Mollie Walker | Published Nov. 27, 2023
Just as the Rangers are set to welcome back one key player, they may have lost another. Finnish wing Kaapo Kakko was forced to exit the Rangers’ game against the Sabres on Monday night at Madison Square Garden after a scary collision with Buffalo defenseman Erik Johnson.
Kakko fell awkwardly on his left leg in the late stages of the second period, immediately clutching his left knee and writhing in pain on the ice. The crowd audibly reacted with discomfort as the replay of the incident played on the MSG video board. Kakko was then assisted off the ice, unable to put any weight on his left leg.
This injury adds to the Rangers’ growing list of sidelined players, including Adam Fox and Filip Chytil, who were both lost in the Nov. 2 game against the Hurricanes. While Fox is eligible to return soon, Chytil is still not on pace for a return to the lineup.
The Rangers have also faced temporary losses of their top goalies, Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick, leading the club to call upon other goaltenders for a game. In his 19 games this season, Kakko has managed to record two goals and one assist.
