Dear Mayor and City Council,
I am writing to express my concerns about the recent rumors regarding the conversion of tennis courts at the Tennis Center into pickleball courts that would be available for free to members of the Pickleball Club. As an avid tennis player and member of the Tennis Center, I find this news disheartening.
It raises the question of why I should continue paying for my tennis membership if others can play for free. It is apparent that Mayor Learnard’s personal interest in pickleball is leading to this decision, irrespective of the objections raised by members like myself.
What disappoints me the most is the fact that I have been misled about this issue from the very beginning. The proponents of this move fail to understand the negative impact it will have on the Tennis Center, its long-time members, coaches, and staff.
The loss of income from tournaments, ALTA Team memberships, hotel revenue, restaurant income, coaching fees, and other sources will undoubtedly lead to the failure of the center. As our Mayor has stated, the Tennis Center is a “Crown Jewel of Peachtree City.” The revenue generated from visiting players who come to Peachtree City for matches will also be lost. These players not only play tennis but also contribute to the local economy by dining and shopping in the area.
Furthermore, non-residents of Peachtree City already pay extra to become members of the Tennis Center. Will non-Peachtree City pickleball players also be allowed to use the facilities for free? This decision makes no logical sense as they will be utilizing the facilities, front desk services, and parking without contributing financially.
Mayor Learnard, I am deeply disappointed in your self-serving attitude. Additionally, to the members of the Pickleball Club, I acknowledge that pickleball is a growing sport. However, tennis and the Tennis Center, where I hold a founding membership, have been a part of this community for a long time and continue to cater to a large population in Peachtree City and the surrounding area.
I would like to remind you of the remarks you made recently in The Citizen, where you stated that the Peachtree City Tennis Center is a renowned facility in the Southeast US, hosting numerous college and professional events that attract thousands of visitors who support local businesses. You also highlighted the ongoing investments being made to improve the facility.
If your plan to convert the tennis courts goes through, the Tennis Center will cease to exist due to a lack of foresight and planning. I urge you and those responsible for allocating SPLOST funds to consider alternative locations for pickleball courts within Peachtree City. There are plenty of other suitable areas that can be utilized.
Sincerely,
Lyda Miller
Peachtree City, Ga.
