PSL 2024 – Mike Hesson appointed Islamabad United head coach

Islamabad United has made a big move by securing the services of former New Zealand coach and Royal Challengers Bangalore director, Mike Hesson, as their new head coach. The team lauded Hesson’s “remarkable track record in international cricket and a reputation for strategic leadership”, and expressed confidence that he will bring “unmatched excellence and experience” to the team.

Initially, United was the most successful team in the PSL, clinching two of the first three titles under the guidance of late Dean Jones. Since then, the team has seen a revolving door of coaches, including Misbah-ul-Haq, Johan Botha, and most recently Azhar Mahmood. However, they have struggled to secure a third PSL title, failing to reach the final since 2018. The 2016 and 2018 champions have been in talks with Hesson for some time, positioning him as their top choice.

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, United owner Ali Naqvi described Hesson as “very strategic and analytical” with proven skills in “creating new and modern ways of playing”. Naqvi believes Hesson’s attributes align perfectly with the team’s ethos and sees his appointment as a significant endorsement of the brand and quality of cricket played in the PSL.

Naqvi expressed his excitement about welcoming Hesson to Islamabad United, highlighting his impressive coaching history and work with New Zealand and RCB. He believes that Hesson’s coaching philosophy aligns closely with the team’s values and ambitions and is confident that his expertise will elevate the team’s performance.

Hesson expressed his enthusiasm about joining Islamabad United, citing the team’s professional, modern, and mindful approach. He was particularly drawn to United’s strategy centered around the 4 Es – Excellence, Empowerment, Education, and Environment. Hesson looks forward to working with the talented players and staff to build a successful team and deliver exciting cricket to the fans.

Hesson, 49, achieved significant success during his six-year tenure as the head coach of New Zealand, leading the team to their first World Cup final in 2015.
He also served as the director of cricket for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL in 2019 before parting ways earlier this year.

The upcoming PSL 2024 is scheduled to commence in February and continue until mid-March.
